    Roofing in Ashopton

The submerged history of Ashopton, a village that was lost to the creation of the Ladybower Reservoir in the 1940s, serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of protecting the remaining structures in this beautiful part of the High Peak. For the properties and agricultural buildings that still stand in the vicinity of the former Ashopton site, professional roofing is essential for resisting the damp and often extreme conditions of the Upper Derwent Valley. JJC Contractors provides specialist roofing services for the homes and farmsteads that border the reservoir, where the environment is characterised by high humidity, seasonal mists, and heavy rainfall. Our team is expert in maintaining the traditional gritstone and slate roofing that defines the local architecture, ensuring that these historic assets are preserved for future generations. We understand that a roof in this area must provide more than just shelter; it must be a robust and resilient barrier against the unique climatic challenges of a deep mountain valley. Our comprehensive inspections are designed to identify issues such as moss growth, failing mortar, and water ingress that can quickly compromise the structural integrity of stone buildings. We provide bespoke roofing solutions that prioritise both aesthetic character and modern performance, utilising premium materials sourced from trusted British suppliers. Whether you are managing a heritage property that requires intricate leadwork and chimney repairs or a modern outbuilding needing a high-performance flat roof, we deliver a service that is both transparent and professional. Our commitment to excellence means we never compromise on quality, ensuring that every project is finished to an exacting standard that respects the natural beauty of the Peak District. We also focus on improving the thermal efficiency of local homes, offering advanced insulation systems that help residents manage the often cooler temperatures of the valley. By choosing a dedicated roofing specialist with experience in the Ladybower area, you are ensuring that your property receives the expert care it needs to withstand the test of time. We are proud to support the residents and landowners near Ashopton, providing a roofing service that is as reliable as it is sympathetic to the area’s rich and complex history. Facts about Ashopton

Ashopton was a significant village in the Upper Derwent Valley of Derbyshire that was tragically demolished and submerged in 1943 to make way for the Ladybower Reservoir. The village was once a thriving community with a post office, a general store, several inns, and a beautiful Wesleyan chapel, all of which now lie beneath the waters of the reservoir. Historically, Ashopton was an important focal point for the surrounding hill farming communities, serving as a hub where people would gather for social events and trade. The geography of the original village was at the confluence of the River Ashop and the River Derwent, a strategic location that unfortunately made it the ideal site for a major water storage project to serve the industrial cities of Sheffield, Derby, Leicester, and Nottingham. One of the most famous landmarks lost to the flood was the Ashopton Inn, a popular stop for travellers on the road between Sheffield and Glossop. Interestingly, during periods of extreme drought, the remains of the village, including the foundations of houses and the iconic bridge, have occasionally reappeared, drawing thousands of visitors who come to witness the ‘lost village.’ The climate of the area is typical of the High Peak, with heavy rainfall and cooler temperatures that were the primary reason for choosing this valley for reservoir construction. Today, the area is a major tourist destination, with the massive Ladybower Dam standing as a feat of British engineering and the surrounding hills of Win Hill and Bamford Edge providing spectacular viewpoints. Wildlife is abundant in the area, with the reservoir serving as a vital habitat for waterfowl and the surrounding woods home to deer and various birds of prey. The community that once lived in Ashopton was relocated to nearby villages like Bamford and Hope, but the memory of the lost village remains a central part of local folklore. The architectural style of the old village was dominated by sturdy gritstone buildings with heavy slate roofs, designed to withstand the harsh Pennine weather. The creation of the reservoir transformed the local landscape from a pastoral valley into a dramatic aquatic environment, blending industrial utility with natural beauty. Despite its disappearance over eighty years ago, Ashopton continues to capture the public imagination as a symbol of the sacrifices made for the industrial progress of the 20th century. The surrounding area remains one of the most photographed and visited parts of the Peak District National Park, offering a unique blend of historical intrigue and breathtaking scenery.
